hello

I’m Helen and I’m an experienced piano teacher offering fun and inspiring lessons from my music studio at home in Norwich, NR2. I welcome students of all ages, from beginners to advanced players, tailoring lessons to the individual and helping them to achieve their goals.

With a 100% pass rate and two-thirds of those at merit and distinction level, students who wish to take exams can feel confident they will receive the preparation and guidance they need. But, most importantly, I hope to instil in my students the knowledge, the confidence and passion to master the music that interests or moves them – and if they haven’t discovered what that music is yet, I will help them find out!

about

Helen began learning the piano at the age of five, was awarded a grade 8 distinction at fourteen years old and started teaching at seventeen. She pursued a career in publishing after university but her love of playing never diminished and drew her back to teaching after having children of her own. She currently delivers her lessons at home, as well as in school and healthcare settings. She is in possession of an enhanced DBS certificate and is a member of EPTA (the European Piano Teachers Association).

Helen’s experiences as a student, parent and teacher all feed into her nurturing and sensitive approach. The benefits of learning an instrument are well researched and recognised, from supporting academic achievement to protecting cognitive health into old age, to boosting confidence and mental well-being. Time at the piano can provide an outlet for feelings but also an escape from everyday stresses and overthinking brains – it is a healthy and happy place to lose oneself and spend time alone. But it is also wonderful when it is shared with and enjoyed by others.

Helen listens to her students and handpicks music to inspire, challenge and excite them. She introduces them to a wide repertoire across different musical genres and encourages them to be creative and expressive no matter how advanced their technical skills. She teaches theory alongside the practical skills and techniques, as part of building up all-round musicianship.

With a 100% pass rate, Helen is experienced in guiding students through exams and ensuring they are well prepared. She believes that taking exams can be a helpful way of setting goals and motivating practice, but it is by no means the only way. She also believes in the old cliche that it is never too late to learn.

testimonials

‘Helen began teaching my son the piano during one of the covid lockdowns in 2020. He initially had lessons online which Helen managed extremely well, although we were all pleased to move to in person lessons when we could. Helen is very skilled at finding the right thing for the individual and has sensitively steered my son through a whole variety of musical experiences, including grade exams and different musical genres whilst also encouraging his creativity and musicality. Helen has always been extremely sensitive to my son's needs and is able to adapt her teaching style accordingly. She instinctively knows when to push him on and went to have a more gentle approach. I would recommend Helen without hesitation as a fantastic piano teacher.’

'Helen took my teenager from absolute piano beginner to playing with confidence in just six months. Helen absolutely engaged her with inspiring music choices such as John Williams and ragtime. She instinctively knew how to get the best out of my child using clear directions and a lot of kindness. I would recommend Helen to anyone wanting to learn piano.'
